Eat for the training you did, not the weight you want
Your calorie and carb target should move with your training load — bigger on rest days, tighter on hard ones — instead of holding at one flat number every day. A single average number is wrong on every day that isn’t average, and for anyone training seriously, almost no day is average.
Most calorie tools set one number and repeat it daily regardless of what you actually did. Twenty miles and a day of meetings get the same target. That’s not neutral — it’s a design choice that treats training load as noise instead of the primary input it actually is.
Why does a flat calorie target fail people who train?
Because it optimizes for the wrong thing. A flat number is built to hit an average weekly balance, and on paper that can still work — eat the same amount every day, and over a week the math evens out. But bodies don’t experience averages, they experience days. Underfuel a hard session and recovery suffers, performance drops, and the next session is compromised before it starts. Overfuel a rest day relative to what you need and you’re adding calories with nothing to spend them on.
The fix is to let the target track the day: ease it up when the training load is high, tighten it when it’s low, and let a rest day carry a smaller allowance than a threshold session or a long ride. The weekly average can land in the same place — the difference is that each individual day is now sized to what you actually asked your body to do.
What should change day to day, and what shouldn’t?
The deficit or surplus that your goal sets — lose, maintain, gain — should cycle around training load: smaller on hard training days, bigger on rest days, so a hard session isn’t run on the same restriction as a day off. Carbs should have a floor on training days specifically, because carbohydrate is the fuel training performance depends on most directly, and running that floor lower defeats the point of training hard in the first place.
What shouldn’t change is the absolute floor underneath everything: your target should never drop below your resting metabolic rate (RMR) — the energy your body needs at rest, before any activity. No goal, however aggressive, is worth pushing a target below that line. It’s a non-negotiable floor, not a suggestion.
Does recovery status matter, or just training volume?
Both. Training load tells you what you did; recovery tells you how ready your body is to handle more. A hard week that also comes with poor sleep, elevated resting heart rate, or a low recovery score from a wearable is a body under more strain than the training volume alone suggests. When recovery is low, the target should ease further — not because the training changed, but because the body’s capacity to absorb a deficit changed.
This is one of the clearest arguments for wearable data over guesswork: recovery is measurable, and a measured recovery score is a far better input than assuming every week is a good week. A body running on poor sleep and elevated stress needs a different number than the same training load on a well-recovered week, even though the workouts on paper look identical.
Isn’t this more complicated than just tracking calories?
It sounds like more to manage, but the goal is the opposite — a single number each day that already accounts for training, so there’s nothing left to manually adjust. The complexity moves from “how do I estimate how much extra I need after that ride” (a question you’d otherwise answer yourself, imprecisely, every single day) into the calculation that produces your one target. You get the same simplicity of “eat to this number,” except the number is actually correct for the day you’re in.
